La mitologia racconta che Zante, figlio del re di Troia Dardano, giunse sull\u2019isola, rimase incantato dalla sua bellezza e costru\u00ec l\u2019omonima citt\u00e0. Fin dai tempi antichi ha attraversato insieme sofferenze e glorie.<\/p><p>Anticamente fu occupata dal malvagio re di Itaca Ulisse. Si ribellarono e lo espulsero per 450 anni fino al 404 a.C. vivono democraticamente e sull\u2019isola fiorisce una grande cultura. Poi fondarono la colonia di Zacantha in Spagna. La guerra tra le due grandi citt\u00e0 greche di Atene e Sparta non la lascia sola, a volte diventa alleata dell\u2019una e talvolta dell\u2019altra. Negli anni bizantini divenne provincia di Bisanzio.<\/p><p>Durante il periodo dei crociati fu saccheggiato nel 1150 d.C. dai Normanni. Dopo la caduta di Costantinopoli cambier\u00e0 molti padroni e vivr\u00e0 giorni di fame e miseria. Nel 1488 la occuperanno i Veneziani e per molti anni il \u201cFiore del Levante\u201d, come lo battezzarono, rester\u00e0 sotto il loro dominio. L\u2019amministrazione che esercitano sull\u2019isola \u00e8 dura. Ci sono i padroni da una parte e il popolo, lo schiavo, il popolare, dall\u2019altra. La redenzione arriva nel 1797 dai francesi che si fermano un anno. Dal 1809 al 1864 gli inglesi governarono l\u2019isola e opprimevano gli abitanti.<\/p><p>I suoi abitanti stanno combattendo per la loro liberazione e l\u2019unione dell\u2019isola con la Grecia. Abbiamo un grande sviluppo intellettuale nell\u2019isola tra la fine del 17\u00b0 secolo e l\u2019inizio del 18\u00b0 secolo, con grandi rappresentanti delle lettere. Il nostro poeta nazionale Dionysios Solomos \u00e8 nato qui. Al tempo della rivoluzione, ascoltando i cannoni del Messolongo dal colle Stranis, scrisse l\u2019Inno Nazionale. Citt\u00e0 natale dell\u2019intransigente Hugo Foskolos e del rivoluzionario scrittore di inni Andreas Kalvos.<\/p><p>L\u2019attuale citt\u00e0 di Zante \u00e8 nuova dopo i devastanti terremoti del 1953. Nella citt\u00e0 il visitatore pu\u00f2 vedere la famosa Chiesa e il monastero di Agios Dionysios, il santo patrono della citt\u00e0. La fortezza veneziana sulla collina. Da lass\u00f9 si pu\u00f2 ammirare il panorama della citt\u00e0 e del paesaggio circostante. Il museo post-bizantino dove sono state raccolte icone antiche e si pu\u00f2 ammirare l\u2019incomparabile arte dell\u2019iconografia bizantina.
